And amongst this fertile ground, Optic Nerve have emerged as one of its most compelling artists. Their debut album \"Angel Numbers\" is irrefutable proof. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo much sets this band apart that it's hard to know where to start. For one, there are Gigi De Lacy's cut-up lyrics. Delivered with a bark at turns harrowing and triumphant, they honour the nuance of complex frustrations while subverting punk's tired trend for abject and simplistic negativity. They are referential, but to a point where it becomes high-concept. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThese days it takes a certain amount of self-assuredness to include both a conceptual explainer and a list of footnotes in your record's insert. But we can assure you that any pretension is earned by an intellectual rigour. And you'll have to take our word for it, because to summarise or paraphrase the lyrical approach and the concepts at work here any further, would only do them a disservice. Okay, a hint: it's locus is the heresy of a French Christian Mystic whose thought was centuries ahead of her time when she was burned at the stake. Suffice to say also, that this is the greatest punk record ever to pay homage to Madonna's \"What It Feels Like For A Girl\". \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThe ambition on display here scales the heights not of ego but of transcendent songwriting. The guitar playing is immaculate and unique, a genius melding of countrified twang and hardcore intensity. The rhythm section pound with bulletproof precision, but are smart enough to know when to cede ground to inspired flourishes of acoustic guitar, interjections of experimental noise and even a flute, which kicks off the album with such flair that love on first listen is unavoidable. They’ve commandeered the kitchen and present a greater depth of flavour and culinary nuance.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYou might remember them first as a food track in a Marrickville back alley where they served a damaged blend of salty post punk and psychedelic hardcore, salt in the hair and salt on the skin, and then a delivery service of ultra minute, dense bites on their Deep Cell LP.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eYears of experimenting and balancing flavours have encouraged them to embrace a restraint and subtlety with Post Pink, a truly new sound and direction for the band that honours their culinary legacy.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEntrée\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSoupe à l’Oignon Gratinée\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe famous gourmand Brillat-Savarin suggested that onions\u003cspan class=\"bcTruncateMore\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003ewere the truffles of the poor: plentifully available, delicious when cooked well, comforting. Den have mastered the charming entrée, onion soup. A meal at The Restaurant would not be complete without the comfort of this delightfully odorous fair. Truffles are sharp, domineering flavours, Deep Cell flavours. Post Pink infers a certain kind of comfort that you might not anticipate in the wake of their previous output.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBy this I mean, the ears do not bleed! There is a similar density to the new album, but in place of the sharpened rapier poking deep in your head and puncturing your eardrum, Post Pink has an ethereal quality much like you’d love about Wire’s 154. The weight and solemnity of Deep Cell has lifted, the weightless lyrics will hit you with a brilliant mash of imagery in a way that you love about Brian Eno’s lyricism, some silly moments with words like “happenstance”, copulating jellyfish, a frog in a bowl of onion soup.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHeartwarming and playful music.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003ePlats Principaux\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEntrecôte de Bœuf, Sauce au Poivre, Frites Maison\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis is the essence of the Post Pink meal, this playful quality. We have all eaten a steak, but the best flavours come when a steak is slightly undercooked, and to cook it well requires skill, technique, patience.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt is so common now to hear bands who woefully overcook, either focusing on their message with heart rending condemnations of the tasteless quality of contemporary life, or writing impenetrable attempts to elevate us out of the crudity, but so often a crude denunciation of crudity compounds the crudity, the misery, the tastelessness, and so often we are left with a tough, chewy, over-cooked steak.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThis Post Pink meal took a long time to cook – it was recorded in 2023 and mixed over two long years in Micky’s studio – but it wasn’t on the pan the whole time. To pound the metaphor out one last time, preparation and decoration and adornment of a meal might take a while, but the steak is juicy and tender precisely because of this elusive quality that often falls flat when it’s done poorly: this tastes like it was made with love, this tastes like it was made by people playfully discovering music and going with their instincts and their passions and not trying to make a statement, win a chefs hat or get a write up in Broadsheet.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDessert\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eSoufflé au Grand Marnier\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe proof is in the soufflé, and this is a perfect way to finish our meal. The descriptors I’ve used are all present in this delightful little dish: light, playful, weightless and comforting. I would say this about other records that I feel have balanced flavours with Post Pink and would have shared some gastronomic insights: John Cale’s Paris 1919 and Brian Eno’s Before and After Science are two that come to mind.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Restaurant is a non-smoking venue, you are welcome to smoke outside in the street. You will notice from outside how warm, well lit and charming this place is. Most underground punk bands don’t make four albums, but it makes sense for Institute. Even on their earliest releases, Institute’s sound teemed with possibility, drawing from a long history of anarcho-punk, post-punk, and hardcore, and fusing those aesthetics with great, classic-sounding songwriting. Ragdoll Dance finds Institute back with their original lineup (including Albert from Nosferatu and Altar of Eden on drums) and returning to a DIY approach to recording, working both at home (using the same setup as singer Moses Brown’s solo project, Peace de Résistance) and with Joe and Owen of D4MT Labs, whose gritty yet vital recordings have documented some of DIY punk’s best contemporary bands. Institute also chose to work within the international hardcore community to release the record; Brown plays drums in Secretors alongside Joe from Roach Leg Records, whose label is known for releasing some of the noisiest, most fringe recordings in the punk sub-underground (across the pond they’ve gone with the iconic La Vida Es Un Mus). While Ragdoll Dance is culturally embedded in the world of DIY hardcore punk, musically it tends to move back toward the more eclectic sound of Salt and Catharsis. The album’s title is a nod to Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Brown also cites arty post-punks Magazine as an influence on the record, which shows on tracks like “City” and “Where’s It Go,” energetic, left-of-center pop songs that challenge but also gratify. If you’re looking for the savage young Institute, though, “Uncle Sam’s Hate” and “Plateau of Self” crackle with raw rock and roll energy that few groups can summon, particularly groups with Institute’s inimitable style, musical chops, and lyrical weight. Those of us who loved Peace de Résistance’s 2022 debut, Bits and Pieces, will be pleased to hear that much of what made that album so memorable—the glam-infused art rock sound, the gritty yet richly textured production, and Moses’s bluntly class-conscious lyrics—carries over into Lullaby for the Debris. Yet Lullaby for the Debris also sounds more refined, more timeless than its predecessor, with “40 Times the Rent,” “Coddle the Rich,” and “Ain’t What It Used to Be,” all built around chooglin’ Lou Reed-style riffs beamed in from the great rock and roll beyond. Elsewhere on the record, Moses’s arty side shines through, with “The Funny Man” and “Pay Us More” full of uncanny sounds that invite the listener to bathe in their rich sonic textures. “I Am” and “You Are Absurd” move into a new territory Brown calls “despondent funk,” their rubbery bass sounds and eerily progressive soundscapes evoking Station to Station-era Bowie, while the title track closes the album on a pensive note, landing somewhere between 70s minimalist composition and the mellower moments from Eno’s solo albums.
