Survey compilation of underground DIY music from Australia and New Zealand between 2017 - 2026 selected by two record stores/labels/institutions in Sydney and Melbourne.

For the past 6 years, Lulu’s Sonic Disco Club (based in Melbourne/Naarm) have a penchant for releasing local grassroots & DIY music on physical and digital forms not specific to genre. On several occasions they’ve partnered up with international labels such as Upset The Rhythm (London, UK), Goner Records (Memphis, US), Alter (London, UK) & Digital Regress (Oakland, USA).

Prop Records is a brick and mortar record store (based in Ashfield, Sydney/Wangal) that was established in 2023. It runs in conjunction with an art gallery - Prop Gallery which operates under the same ethos. They have successfully released a series of live cassette tapes of local bands that have played in their courtyard throughout the store’s existence. This will be their first vinyl record release.

Together Lulu’s & Prop have collaborated on this compilation which chronicles a shared love and appreciation for off-kilter music that is self-sustaining and multi-faceted. Encounters From The Antipodes… sets out to what its title and artwork suggest - championing local bands and artists from around Australia & New Zealand to form a greater whole than its individual parts within an underground community. Taking cues and inspiration from legendary OZ/NZ labels such as Missing Link, M-Squared, R.I.P. Society, Paradise Daily, Altered States Tapes, Tommy Gun, Chapter, Flying Nun and Xpressway Records (to name a few), Lulu’s and Prop have sourced songs by both more established and emerging artists and bands to capture a specific moment of time, 2017 - 2026 (affectionately named after a glitch in Roman numerals, MMXX0I7 - MMXXII6).

The compilation traverses homegrown post-punk and off-kilter genres that the antipodes have always been renowned for. The bittersweet chime of artists such as Coyote (Dunedin/Ōtepoti), Eternal Dust (Sydney/Eora), Lorry and Astrid (Sydney/Eora) contrast with the exploratory pulse of the late great Benaiah Fiu of Sex Drive fame in his last project Strange Motel (Gold Coast/Dangan Bullen). Sleeper & The Snake (Melbourne/Naarm), Uncle & Niece project - NEIS (Wandella/Yuin) and acerbic delivery of The Native Cats (Hobart/Nipulina), Low Life (Sydney/Eora) & Station Model Violence (part Sydney/Eora, part Melbourne/Naarm). Gloomy atmospherics collide with bombastic and spirited bursts from The Blinds (Melbourne/Naarm) and G2G (Sydney/Eora, Perth/Boorloo).
